Smart Home System, Regents Park
The purchaser of this property contacted us before moving in and asked us to consult on the potential audio, visual, lighting and networking solutions that could be integrated into this Regents Park property, without the need for costly and intrusive re-wiring. All of this would need to be performed during a three week period between the exchange and completion of the sale ready for the move in date.
Following on from our initial discussions with the client to understand their needs, requirements and the way they intended to use the system, we carried out a full cable check to diagnose what could be accomplished with the existing cabling infrastructure. This allowed us to reference the client’s needs, and the products required to achieve that result.
Armed with our report we were able to propose solutions that we had confidence in and required minimal cabling. As there were many other trades working in the property at the same time, we produced a scope of works and functionality specification at this point, so as to make it absolutely clear to everyone involved the physical work that would be covered by ourselves and others, but also the features and parameters of what could be expected from the finished system.
For the intelligent lighting a Rako wireless system was implemented to control the lights in key rooms of the property, achieved by taking its power from the lighting circuit and using keypads which run on a five year battery this was a very practical solution that required zero rewiring.
Using the solitary CAT5 cable already wired to each TV we were able to distribute high definition video from a centralised location, control the Sky box, Blu Ray player and AppleTV and network not only the TV for on demand streaming services such as BBC iPlayer HD and Lovefilm, but also to network the Sonos multiroom audio system for a hardwired, faster and more reliable connection of the music and radio from the Bowers & Wilkins in-ceiling speakers around the property. This was fantastic use of a single cable allowing us to cover multiple areas.
With the client wishing to use the iPads, iPhones and laptops they already owned around house it was of paramount importance to install a robust wireless data network to ensure their devices were always connected to the system. Wireless access points were installed on each floor that enabled a handover between each point as you roamed around the property, ensuring that the Wi-Fi signal was always at its peak strength no matter which room you were in.
With multiple services being implemented a means of controlling these areas from a single touch screen or remote was required. A smart home system from Control4 was designed and installed that made use of the smartphones, tablets and also handheld remotes for each TV around the property, allowing operation of single rooms or full house commands.
